Story: The film traces the life of the 8th century Hindu philosopher Sri Jagadguru Adi Shankara (Kaushik), who propagated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta across the sub-continent.Movie Review: You better read up a little about the life and time of Adi Shankaracharya before you venture out to the theatre to watch this movie. For if you are counting on the movie to fill you up on the details about the life and times of one of one of the most important proponents of the philosophy of Advaita, you’d only come back even more clueless - than when you entered the movie hall i.e.There are innumerable unauthenticated random posts about Adi Shankaracharya on the internet that offer more insight about the spiritual guru and his philosophy than this two and a half hour movie, which is a sad excuse for a biopic. If there was ever a list of the most hopeless movies ever made, this one will be a strong contender to top the list.
No sarcasm. The filmmaker sticks to the traditional account of the saint’s life chronicling the journey right from his birth in Kaladi to his eventual ascent to becoming the Jagadguru – the guru of the world – aged just 32. But it is so amateurishly put together that his life is reduced to being a hotch potch of special appearances. Nagarjuna’s 3 minute cameo is easily the best part of the movie acting wise.
The likes of Suman, Tanieklla Bharani, Posani Krishna Murali, Sreeram Chandra, Sana, Meena all just come and go.The lead actor Kaushik is an absolute disaster who when not looking dazed, looks intensely agitated. He neither has the screen presence nor the acting ability to carry off such a role. The gaudy make up and tacky music and special effects only worsen matters. The movie ends with a little monologue where in the Jagadguru talks about the power of the youth, the greatness of the Hindu race and how the young people know best to love and how love is the essence of Sanatana Hindu dharma and some such gibberish. Need we say more?Note: It’s so bad that it’s not even funny, watch it if you have time to kill and make sure the hall has seating comfortable enough to doze off.
